CompliChef: The Story So Far

CompliChef really started with one chef — Nick — standing in a care home kitchen, staring at paperwork that felt like it had been printed sometime in the 90s. Everything was SFBB booklets, loose sheets, and systems that didn’t really help anyone. So he tidied it all up, put proper records in place, and kept the kitchen running the right way.

Before all that, Nick had actually studied IT at college. He just couldn’t picture himself sitting behind a desk all day, so he chose the kitchen instead. But that mix — food safety plus tech — never really left him.

While working in the care home, he built a simple digital setup for himself: basic record forms, a digital rota — nothing fancy, but it worked. It ran for a few years, then he moved on, and the project stayed there, collecting dust.

Life took a sharp turn after a back injury. Nick couldn’t do the long chef hours anymore, so he became a stay-at-home dad — to nine sons and two daughters. And somewhere between school runs and nappies, he went back to that old idea.

He rebuilt it properly this time: a standalone system he actually felt proud of. He even tried selling it, but marketing a tiny home-built product wasn’t exactly easy.

Then early 2025 came around. That’s when CompliChef V1 opened to subscribers — restaurants, cafés, care homes — anyone who wanted all their compliance in one place.

Things moved quicker than he expected:
• V1.3 – staff rota
• V1.4 – task management
• V1.5 – allergy management
• V2.0 – the full platform today

And somehow, it just kept growing.

Nick still laughs about how he “didn’t want an office job,” yet he now spends most days at his keyboard — coding, designing, doing support, talking to customers, fixing bugs, and trying to do a bit of marketing on top of it all. But he genuinely enjoys it. All of it.

Because this time, he’s not just sitting at a desk. He’s building something that kitchens rely on every day.

How we got here

2018

Nick builds the first digital record-keeping system for a care home kitchen — basic forms, digital rota, and simple logging.

2020 — Stand-Alone System Rebuilt

After a back injury, Nick begins rebuilding the original idea from scratch while becoming a stay-at-home dad.
